He was born February 16, 1839 at North Hero, Vermont, and was the 3rd son of Allen and Clarissa (Hazen) Sawyer. In 1850, Allen brought his wife and children to the middle west, making the journey to Fayette county, Iowa.
In June, 1861, Iram responded to the call for troops and enlisted for 3 years as a Corporal into the 3rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company F.
He was discharged on December 8, 1863 by reason of promotion to Sergeant Major, 60th US Colored Troops. He was discharged May 25, 1865 at Little Rock Arkansas as 2nd Lieutenant.
Iram Sawyer married October 6, 1864 Mary Crawford Irwin, daughter of Stephen Irwin.
She died June 20, 1903 leaving 4 children;
Captain Sawyer was a member of Torrence Post #2 GAR, a member of Lexington Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution, and the Military Order of Loyal Legion of the United States.
Death claimed him on May 12, 1909.
