Jennie was 7 in June 1844 and living at Carthage Jail in Carthage, Hancock County Illinois with her parents. Her dad George was the jailer when Joseph and Hyrum Smith were shot and killed on June 27, 1844. She told her story of being there throughout her life, and when she died her obituary appeared in the Carthage Republican newspaper March 5, 1913. "Mrs J. C. Metlen, of Dillon, Montana, died in Los Angeles, Calif., Feb. 26, 1913. She was the aunt of George D. Main of this city [Carthage] and visited them last fall {1912]. The funeral was conducted at Dillon"
