MIDDLEBURY, IN. — Lydia Mae Kauffman, 90, Middlebury, went to be with her Lord and Savior at 12:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was born at Loogootee, Indiana, Sept. 3, 1926, to William and Lizzie Gingerich.
She was admitted to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, with breathing difficulties Aug. 7, 2017 and later admitted to the Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart, on Aug. 16, 2017.
On July 2, 1945, she married Elmer Riegsecker. He passed away Feb. 5, 1982. On March 3, 1984, she married Marion Kauffman. He passed away Aug. 5, 2016.
Lydia has two sons, Stephen (Waneta) Riegsecker of Middlebury and Larry Riegsecker of Goshen and two daughters, Diane (Ernie) Cross of Wawaka and Karen Knowlton of Goshen. She also had 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
With her marriage to Marion, she gained three sons, Ron (Tina) Kauffman of Shipshewana, Craig (Diane) Kauffman of Albany, Oregon, and Loren (Paula) Kauffman of Columbia City. He also had six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She also has one surviving brother, Bill (Naomi) Gingerich of Ohio.
Preceding her in death were her parents; first husband, Elmer; six brothers, Pete, George, Jake, Joe, Herman and Clarence; two sisters, Juliann and Betz; and a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Riegsecker.
Lydia loved to have things clean and one of her first jobs was cleaning houses. She worked many years at Artisan & Kirsch in the sewing department. In her retirement years, Lydia and Marion enjoyed delivering RVs and trailers. Lydia was always willing to help her family. People would often see her down at Cargo Plus busy washing dishes and talking with the customers. She loved to eat out. When asked where she wanted to eat it was always wherever the car stops. Lydia was a member of First Mennonite Church, Middlebury and later Marion Christian Fellowship.
Viewing was at Marion Christian Fellowship from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017. Burial and graveside services were at Millers 8 Square Cemetery in Middlebury at 9 a.m., Monday, Aug. 28, 2017 followed by the celebration of life service at Marion Fellowship at 11 a.m. Pastors Ron and Char Roth and Pastor Joseph Raber will officiate. Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, Goshen, handled arrangements.
