"He graduated at Brown University in 1857, and was mathematical teacher at Pierce Academy, Middleboro, Mass., three years before graduated and two after. He was principal of Woodstock Academy, Woodstock, Ct., nearly two years, and principal of Antwerp Literary Institute (now Ives Seminary), Antwerp, N.Y., five years. Since about 1867 he has resided at Raynham, Mass. He m. 1857, Sep. 3, Louisa Catherine, dau. of Sidney Leonard of Raynham. She d. 1873, May 4, aged 35. She was a graduate of Pierce Academy, 1856. He m. (2d) 1877, Dec. 24, Eugenia, dau. of Barzillai and Hannah (Robinson) Hall, of Raynham. Mr. and Mrs. Manning graduated in the C.L.S.C. course of reading in 1884, and in the New England S.S. Normal Union in 1888."

The institute was opened May 20, 1861, with J. M. manning, a graduate of Brown University, in charge, and two assistant teachers. During the following year three teachers were added. The number of students in attendance was about one hundred and twenty.

Most wonderful were the results of his laudable ambition, and in 1854 and 1855 he had with the corps of able assistants, among whom was Charles C. Burnett, A. M., the classical instructor for several years, and John M. Manning, the mathematical, and many beside, brought Pierce Academy to a very high rank of literary excellence, as her numerous graduates, filling most important positions in life, will abundantly testify.
