Copper Center resident Lucille C. Brenwick, 91, died of natural causes Nov. 4, 2002, at home.

Visitation will be at 7 p.m. today at Kluti-Kaah Hall. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at Kluti-Kaah Hall, with the Rev. Fritz Geffe officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at the Kluti-Kaah Memorial Cemetery, with Jim Johnson officiating. Pallbearers will include Bill Hash, Raymond Oscar Craig, Randall Ashby, Ronnie Lincoln, Kenneth Ewan and Michael Ewan.

Mrs. Brenwick was born in Copper Center and graduated from Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Ore.

She worked at the Copper Center Lodge from 1944 to 1949 and as a cook at Trimms Camp from 1951 to 1957. In 1958, she built and was owner of Tazlina Trading Post, which she operated until 1971. From 1960 to 1962, she helped her husband and brother build the road to Klutina Lake, now known as the Brenwick Craig Road.

Mrs. Brenwick was a member of Copper Center Chapel and served on numerous boards, including of State Operated School, Ahtna and Copper River Native Association, HUD Housing and Senior Citizen Advisory.

She was a member of the Alaska Native Sisterhood, and was a charter member, lifetime member and past president of the American Legion Auxilary in Glennallen.

She enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmachining, river rafting, watching wildlife, traveling and spending time at Klutina Lake.

Her family wrote: “Lucille Brenwick, also known as 'Aunt Lou' and 'Mrs. B' was a grand lady. She had a zest for life that she displayed to the day of her death. She lived life to the fullest. She was the matriarch of a huge family and an inspiration to all. She leaves an unfillable void.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Craig; brothers John Craig and Oscar J. Craig; sister, Anne Bottinger; husband, Leonard Brenwick; and son, Charles Smithart.

Mrs. Brenwick is survived by her daughters, Audrey Adler of Copper Center, and Gloria Cook of Redding Calif.; son, John Wesley Smithart of Reno, Nev.; numerous grandchildren, great-graandchildren, nieces and nephews; and cousins, Harry Johns Sr. of Copper Center and Fred Ewan of Gulkana.

Arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown.
