Charles "Atlas" Hurt was a forward for the University of Kentucky basketball team, playing for Coach Joe B. Hall from 1979 to 1983. While on the team, he scored 786 points, ranking him 91st on the team's cumulative career points board.

In 1983, as the overall 134th selection, Mr. Hurt was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks. In 1986, following his draft rights renouncement, Mr. Hurt opted to play professionally for Japan. In 1989, following a stint working for Governor Martha Layne Collins' administration, Mr. Hurt enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served throughout the Middle East and in Germany. Most recently, he became a volunteer assistant basketball coach for Shelby County High School.Charles Mitchell Hurt

Charles Mitchell Hurt, 55, Shelbyville, died Friday, September 16, 2016 at University of Louisville Hospital following a long battle with leukemia. A native of Shelbyville, he was the son of John A. Hurt and Alma L. O'Banion DeGraffenreid.

He graduated from Shelby County High School, where he played on the 1979 Championship Basketball Team. He went on to the University of Kentucky, where he excelled as a basketball great. Following college, he was drafted by Milwaukee to play professional basketball, but opted instead to go to Japan where he played professional basketball for six years. He worked briefly in the administration of former Governor Martha Layne Collins. He then joined the U.S. Army in 1989, where he served for the next 21 years. He was an information systems chief and served in Germany, Kuwait, Korea, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Following his retirement from the military, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Shelby County High School. He was a lifelong member of Clay Street Baptist Church.

One brother, John Hurt, Jr., preceded him in death.

Survivors include his loving wife, Donise L. White Hurt of Simpsonville; three sons, Justin Brian Hurt of NC, Matthew Scott Romero of WA and Isaiah Torey White of Simpsonville; one daughter, Megan Ally Hurt of Augusta, GA; his parents, John A. (Tina) Hurt of Shelbyville and Alma DeGraffenreid of Louisville; two sisters, Victoria "Vikki" Yvonne Hurt of Louisville and Phyllis Martine (Chris) Bell of Garland, TX; two step-sisters, Lisa (Jack) McNear of Louisville and Danise (Jerome) Harris of Shelbyville; one step-brother, Danny (Erica) Wooten, Jr. of Louisville; five grandchildren, Madison Romero, Micah Aiden Hurt, Marilyn Romero, Nevaeh Hurt and Myles Hurt and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends and fans.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the gymnasium at Shelby County High School with visitation after 10 a.m. Rev. Robert M. Marshall, Sr. will deliver the eulogy. Rev. Norris Beckley and Rev. James Booker, Jr. will assist. Burial with follow with military honors at Grove Hill Cemetery.
