According to her marriage certificates, Nellie Evaline Hendershot was born the daughter of Elijah and Lucinda Hatton Hendershot on December 31, 1885*, in Jackson County, IN.

In the 1900 Federal Census, she was living with Mort and Maud Workinger in Brownstown, IN, with their two young children. She was 13 at the time and listed as a servant - likely helping out with the children.

On October 10, 1902, Nellie Hendershot married Henry Runger in Jackson County, IN. They apparently divorced before the end of 1902.

On November 21, 1903, Nellie Runger married Drury Richard Williams in Jackson County, IN. Nellie and Drury Williams had at least one child. He died on October 29, 1906 in Brownstown, IN, of heart problems. Memorial #163798796.

On August 25, 1908, Nellie Williams married William Henry Blythe in Lawrence County, IN. The 1910 Federal Census showed that they were living in Bedford, IN. Listed as living with them were: Belle Blythe aged 7; Ellen Blythe aged 4; Debra M Blythe aged 10 months (actually Della); and her sister, Sylvia Reedy aged 17 (Sylvia Hendershot Poore).

From articles in the Brownstown Banner, the family (seven children - one from Nellie's second marriage; five from her third; unclear who the father was for Belle or also known as Myrtle Belle, moved to Brownstown, IN, from Medora, IN.

Nellie M. Blythe died on November 25, 1918. According to her death certificate, Dr C.L. Wilson had been attending her from November 10 - 23, 1918, and last saw her alive on November 23. He listed that Nellie Blythe died of influenza as well as starvation and neglect. It is possible that Nellie Blythe had contracted the Spanish flu.

Funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev Jesse Nichols Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, followed by burial in the Smallwood Cemetery. She was survived by her husband and seven children.

Articles from the Brownstown Banner published on November 27, 1918, indicated that the family was destitute to the point that Trustee Worth Clark had sent $7.50 worth of provisions to them the prior week.

William Blythe was arrested and charged with neglect and failure to provide for his family. The seven children were taken in by two of his sisters to their homes in Bedford.

William Blythe was given a chance to gain employment under the supervision of the Salvation Army and thus provide for his family. However, according to another article published January 22, 1919, in the Brownstown Banner, he failed to provide for them, so was brought back to face the original charges.

On March 12, 1919, he was tried in Jackson County circuit court, found guilty and sentenced to one to seven years in the Indiana State Prison.

William Blythe married Celestine Presnell on May 26, 1920, in Lawrence County, IN. They had two sons.

*Note: Nellie in the 1900 Federal census showed that she was 13, showing a possible year of birth of 1886. Her marriage certificate to William Blythe indicated her year of birth was 1885. The 1910 Federal Census showed she was 24, again implying a year of birth of 1885. Her death certificate showed a year of birth of 1886. It seems much more logical that Nellie would know her own date of birth, so shown as 1885 in this memorial.

Note: Nellie's DC showed her middle initial was M. Some family trees on Ancestry show it as standing for Mae. Her MC to William Blythe showed her middle name was Evaline. No other records show her with a middle initial or name, so the memorial here shows Evaline. If there are records that show Mae is correct, an edit with explanation/documentation would be appreciated.

Note: Another sister was born to Elijah and Lucinda Hatton Hendershot: Minnie Hendershot Fivecoat. As a young child, according to her obituary, she was taken and raised by her uncle and aunt, Ithamer and Nancy Hendershot.
