The level of misinformation regarding John Russell is such that a memorial based on solid evidence is required.

John Russell died shortly after 7 August 1838 because on that date by deed, "for the love and affection he has for Peggy Evans of Bartholomew County, Indiana; Ruth Yeary and Faith Orr of Lee County, Virginia (his daughters), as well as further consideration of one dollar, conveys all household and kitchen furniture, and 100 acres of land, lying on the west end of his home place on both sides of Cane Creek, being the same piece of land I purchased of Peter Fisher." [Lee County Land Records, 8:56]

John Russell's birth date and location are equally difficult to determine in part because there exists a major dispute as to his parents. Oft cited, but seldom seen, is The Russell Family Bible. It apparently was the basis for many of the dates on the Russell family found in the EARLY SETTLERS of LEE COUNTY, VIRGINIA and ADJACENT COUNTIES VOLUME II
Author: Hattie Byrd Muncy Bales, Laningham, Anne Wynn, with Annotations by Frances B. Lockwood; 1977. Ancestry members can view relevant passages on pages 3 & 4 of the following:
