Urias S Gerber, 91, of 419 Marion, St, Dover, is in "critical" condition today in Union hospital after a gas heater in his house exploded this morning, badly burning him. Hospital authorities did not know the extent of his burns yet, but termed them “very serious". Firemen were called at 1:33 a. m today and found the living room of Gerber's house quite badly damaged Chief C J. Shilling estimated damage at $800, including furniture and walls. Shilling said shortly after noon today that investigators have left: determined the explosion was not i mi ed? by a leak in the gas pipe. He said nothing definite could be determined until he could talk with Gerber and that might be quite some time because of his injuries. The force of the explosion blew glass out of the front window into the street. Damage was confined to the front of the house where the heater and Gerber's bed was located. Gerber who lives alone, reportedly, was working on the stove when the blast occurred, but that report has not been confirmed. Shilling said the fire ignited the davenport, papers and melted plastic drapes m the room. Shilling said there was nc? extensive water damage..and the blaze was quickly extinguished.
