He served during the Civil War first as Captain of Company D, 16th New York Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 142nd New York Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant conduct in the field".
