Born in Massachusetts, he worked as a machinist in Brockton, MA and Newport, RI, where he retired from the Naval Torpedo Station in 1958 after working there 20 years. In 1917, he married Bertha Simpson Pratt, originally from Canada, with whom they had five children: Charles Edward (born 1918), Elizabeth (born 1919), Roy (born 1921), Barbara (born 1926) and Robert (born 1935).

Their oldest son, Charles Edward, known as "Ed", also worked for a time at the Naval Torpedo Station as a journeyman machinist, then served in the merchant marine and attended the US Maritime Service school where he was commissioned an ensign in January 1946. His younger brother, Roy, enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was later accepted an an aviation cadet. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and Naval Aviator in the US Marine Corps after completing flight school in February, 1944. Roy was sent to the Pacific where he was a Marine Aviator with fighter squadron VMF-223. He was lost in the Philippines off the island of Cebu on 24 March 1945 while flying his FG-1D Corsair on an escort mission. Roy's parents were posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal with two gold stars for Roy's service in the Marine Corps.

Following his retirement, Charles and Bertha, spent their retirement in Newport, enjoying time with their children and grandchildren. He passed away in 1974, survived by his wife, remaining children and grandchildren.
