Henry Joseph Streat Jr. "Pete," 85, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2007. He was the widower of Elizabeth Ratcliff Old Streat. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Corbin Hobbs and Elizabeth Buffey (Jim); two sons, Carter Streat and William "Billy" Streat; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Martha Brennan and Eleanor "Snookie" Tinsley; sister-in-law, Peggy Streat; and a long devoted friend, Margot C. Tuggle. He was predeceased by two sons, John Streat and Henry J. Streat III; and two brothers, John T. Streat and James Streat. Pete was a graduate of McGuire University School. He attended the University of Virginia before enlisting in the United States Air Force. He was in ODK Leadership and Scholastic Fraternity, Z Society, Thomas Jefferson Society and manager of the football team. His military service was with the 491st Bomb Group, 2nd Air Division, England. He was an air crew member with 35 missions in a B-24. He obtained the rank of staff sargeant air crew gunner and received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Campaign Ribbon with four bronze service stars, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged in 1945. He reenlisted in 1947 in the United States Air Force Reserves and was discharged in 1958 as a first lieutenant. Pete was involved in local politics. He served as the military Aide-De-Camp to Governors James S. Battle and Mills E. Godwin. In 1967, he ran for the House of Delegates and served as a board member for the American Ordinance Association. Pete had a long career in the insurance industry. In 1949, he was a founding partner in Paul, Beverly & Streat Insurance Company. They served as intermediaries for Lloyd's of London. He was the president of Freilinghesen of Virginia, a subsidiary of J.S. Freilinghesen of New York. In 1982, he semi-retired from H.F. Thompson Insurance Agency. His civic involvement included the National Arthritis Foundation, Virginia Chapter president, director and associate director of the Henricopolis (Henrico County) Soil and Water Conservation Commission, Pamunkey Indian Reservation trustee, Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th Degree, and St. Benedict's Catholic Church parish counsel. He was appointed to Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He enjoyed the company of lifelong friends as a member of the Westmoreland Club, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and West End Catholic Men's Association. Pete was a lifetime member of the Commonwealth Club.
