Natalie Fowler McPhail was widowed at a young age and left with seven children to raise following the death of her husband, Robson.

She struggled to bring her children up and worked at a number of jobs to do so.

"To her great credit her children never had a hungry day even if it meant that she did," said former Detroit City Council member Sharon McPhail in a tribute to her mother.

Mrs. McPhail was very proud of her children's academic and professional accomplishments and would often brag about them to other passengers on the Concord Avenue bus she rode.

Mrs. McPhail, a longtime resident of Cambridge, Mass., and recent Detroit resident, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, of natural causes. She was 82.

Mrs. McPhail moved to Detroit so that her family could provide assistance to her due to her declining health.

Born in Cambridge, Mrs. McPhail attended and graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School. In her early years, she was interested in singing and performing.

Shortly after high school, Mrs. McPhail married Robson McPhail. In addition to raising her children, Mrs. McPhail performed in her husband's musical group, "The Cosmopolitans."

Survivors include three sons, Robert, Roger and Mark; and three daughters, Sharon, Natalie Rena and Robin. Mrs. McPhail's husband, Robson, and a son, Paul, preceded her in death.

Interment will be in Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass.
