Portsmouth - Henry Bernard Heller, son of William and Mary (Book) Heller, was born Feb 10, 19903, at Portsmouth. He was baptized and confirmed at St Mary's Church in Portsmouth. He lived at home with his parents until his father died Nov 18, 1923 and his mother 30 days later, Dec 19, 1923.

April 15, 1925, Henry married Frances Amelia Gubbels at St Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Nine children were born to this union. After their marriage, they farmed near Portsmouth for five years and he worked part-time for the Fullerton Lumber Co. Aug 5, 1930 he began at Standard Oil. In 1939 the service station and tire business was added. He retired in 1963, selling the business to his sons. After retirement he worked for Knapp Shoe Company from 1970 to 1980. Frances, wife of 57 years, died Aug 18, 1979.

Aug 14, 1982, he married Viola Ullrich of Persia. His home in Portsmouth was sold and he made his residence in Persia. Viola died Oct 16, 1996, at which time he moved back to Portsmouth. He was a former mayor of Portsmouth and a member of the town council. He became a resident of the Dunlap Care Center for a short time and this is where he died Nov 15, 1999, at age 96 years, nine months and five days.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Schechinger, and a brother, John; two half brothers, Bill and Joe. He is survived by his children, Alvin (Ethel) Heller of Portsmouth; Elaine (Harold) Buckley of Panama; Mary (Robert) Finken of Earling; Richard (Barbara) Heller of Portsmouth; Rose Ann Schnuettgen of Harlan; Bonnie (Gene) Thielen of Denver, CO; Phillip (Doramae) Heller of Portsmouth; Darlene (Jim) Kenkel of Earling; Veral (Mary) Heller of Lawton; 33 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, two step children, Richard (Pat) Ullrich of Anchorage, AK and Arlen (Joann) Ullrich of Logan; and other relatives.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov 18, 1999, at St Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church with Rev Paul Bianchi celebrant. Burial was in St Mary's Cemetery in Portsmouth, with Ron Heller, Rog Heller, Bob Heller, Don Thielen and Paul Heller honorary casket bearers. Casket Bearers were John Heller, Steven Schnuettgen, Gary Heller, Mike FInken, Dennis Buckley and Jeff Kenkel. Pauley Funeral Home in church of arrangements.

Services were held Thursday, Nov 18 at 10:30 am at St Mary's Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth with burial in St Mary's Cemetery.

Heller is survived by four sons -- Alvin (Ethel) Heller of Portsmouth, Richard (Barbara) Heller of Portsmouth, Philip (Doramae) Heller of Portsmouth and Veral (Mary) of Lawton; five daughters -- Elaine (Harold) Buckley of Panama, Mary (Robert) FInken of Earling, Rose Ann Schnuettgen of Harlan, Bonnie (Gene) Thielen of Denver, CO and Darlene (Jim) Kenkel of Earling; 33 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two stepsons -- Richard (Pat) Ullrich of Anchorage, AK and Arlen (Joann) Ullrich of Logan.
