He lived in Henderson, Ky. and was owner of a grain elevator with his father and brother. He served in the Navy, c1944-c46. He married (1) in 1947, Jeanne M. Lancaster (1924-2003), daughter of Floyd Leslie (1878-1970) and Elsie Simmons Lancaster (1893-1975), of Greenville, Ky. Their children are Richard Spalding, Jr., Leslie Jeanne, and Brenda S. Wathen. He married (2) in 1974, Betty Pippin (b.1930), of Henderson.

Their ten children were Richard Spalding (1926-2008), Robert Louis (1928-2015), Helen Anne (1930-2012), John Hamilton (1931-), Rev. James Francis (1932-2006), Mary Carol (1933-2007), Margaret (b.1935), Joseph (1937), Samuel Thomas, and William Patrick Wathen.
Richard Spalding Wathen died October 1, 2008, and his ashes are in Tampa, Fla. His (1) wife, Jeanne M. Lancaster, died November 16, 2003 and is buried in Fernwood Cemetery, Henderson.
