Dale was born September 4, 1931 at the family farm located about 8 miles east of Northport, NE. He was the first born child of Lewis B. Melvin of Northport, NE and Emma M. Nelson Melvin of Brookeville, KS. In the fall of 1936, the family moved to Angora, NE where his father operated a small grocery. In the spring of 1939, Dale’s family returned to the farm. He attended the Rocky Ridge School just west of the family farm. He graduated Bridgeport High School in 1949 and taught for a year at the Morrill County Rural School District #44, just east of Bayard.
Dale joined the United States Air Force in January, 1951. He was stationed at FE Warren Air Force Base, Cheyenne, WY, where he entered the aviation cadet program in 1952. He attended flying school at Malden AFB in Missouri and graduated with Pilot Class 53 D from Webb AFB, Big Springs, TX. After further training at Moody AFB, GA and Shaw AFB, SC, he flew with the 45th Reconnaissance Squadron in the Korean War. Following his service in Korea, he flew with the 18th Reconnaissance Squadron, Shaw AFB, SC. During his time with the Air Force, he flew some of the most advanced jet aircraft of the day. His service ended in 1956.
Dale then attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 1959. He taught math and science at Bridgeport Schools from 1959-1964. After teaching, he managed the family farm, gave flying lessons, did crop spraying with Taylor Flying Service, and later flew aerial photography for the Department of Agriculture.
He was a past member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served different terms as adjutant or commander of American Legion Post 312, Broadwater, NE.
The love of his life was Blanche Anna Hoffmann from Brush, CO. They met in Denver and just under a year later were married August 2, 1957 at Sterling, CO. In addition to their love of the land, they enjoyed doing many things together including travel, visiting family, and working for the Democratic Party.
He is survived by their four children: Laura (Steve) Seltzer of Aurora, CO, Scott of Bridgeport, NE, Kevin and his spouse Samuel Martin of Bridgeport, NE, and Joyce of Lincoln, NE; his sisters: Betty Lou Modig of Olathe, KS and Christy (Charles) Hesting of Broken Arrow, OK; grandchildren Eric Melvin, Sarah (Alan) Maisonet, and Brock Frohling and his spouse Heather Petersen; and multiple great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
