Merle entered the service from California.

Merle was a signalman on the USS Glennon. He was killed on D-Day when his ship was sunk by German shore battery gunfire. Merle's body was not recovered. A memorial inscription in stone is located at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial in Cambridge, England.
