Revolutionary Figure, Politician. He was born under the name Sergei Mironovich Kostrikov in the town of Urzhum, Russia. He joined the Russian Social-Democratic Labour Party in 1904 and fought in both the 1905 Russian Revolution and Russian Civil War. In 1921 he was appointed head of the Azerbaijan party organization and helped in the formation of the Transcaucasian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic. He was appointed secretary of the Leningrad Communist Party by Joseph Stalin in 1926, and became a full member of the Soviet Politburo in 1930. He quickly became one of the most popular figures in the Soviet government, and was viewed as a potential rival and challenger to the party leadership of Stalin. He was assassinated in his Leningrad party office by Leonid Nikolayev, possibly by the direct orders of Stalin himself. Seventeen political opponents of Stalin were arrested and implicated in Kirov's death as part of a trumped up assassination conspiracy. All seventeen were subsequently sentenced to death and executed by Stalin's orders, including party opposition members Genrikh Yagoda, Lev Kamenev and Gregory Zinoviev. Following Kirov's death, several cities were created or renamed in his honor. In 1935 the Soviet Navy introduced the Kirov class line of warships. He was honored with a full state funeral and his remains were interred within the walls of the Kremlin.
