Alexander was the son of Isaac T. Leonard & Nancy Ann Herrod. At the age of 33, he enlisted into the 19th Georgia State Troops under Captain John Oats, in May 1861, he was given the rank of 1st. Lieutenant. He served for the duration of the war and he was discharged on 12 May 1865 at Kingston, Georgia. After the War, he owned and operated a gristmill in Spring Place, Murray Co., Georgia.

He married Emmaline "Millie" Adeline Jackson on 01 January 1854 in Murray Co., GA and they had eight children.
