John Jones Austin was born on March 18, 1785, in Fishkill, New York, the child of John and Sarah.

John Jones Austin drowned, West Fork of Thompson's Creek on his plantation at the Louisiana-Mississippi border near current US Hwy 61. Oral history from Charles Hamilton (given Sep 2017) is that a flash flood caught him fishing in the creek, drowning at age 48.

The "United States Daughters of 1812" placed a marker (see picture above) on his plantation site in W. Feliciana parish (on land now owned by Charles Hamilton). Mr Hamilton was at the ceremony and says "about 200 people came and the choir from the Methodist Church sang". This site now has the graves of John Jones Austin, his wife Sarah and one child Meranda. The site is far from any access roads and requires crossing fenced fields with cattle grazing. GPS is 30.959260, -91.316432.

He married Sarah Palmer in Baton Rouge, LA on 20 Sep 1804. His 1st marriage was ca1795 to Jane Meeker b Ca1777 of New Jersey. There is no recorded evidence of when he first came to the Felicianas. He was a planter,soldier, slave owner and politician. He received a land grant from the Spanish Govt. and had 564 acres in the Felicianas from 1807-1820.

After helping to defeat the Spanish at Baton Rouge in 1810, he later served his country in the War of 1812 by participating in the Battle of New Orleans at Chalmette as a member of the 1st Feliciana Parish Police Jury Militia.
