Evelyn Jean Dawson, 89, a resident of the UAW High-rise in Pekin, passed away at 10:28 a.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin.
Born August 21, 1928 in Virginia, Illinois to Clifford and Ollie Olroyd, she married Evangelist Dr. Loren Dawson, Jr. on January 28, 1946 in Beardstown. He died July 20, 2008 in Beardstown. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jake Olroyd; and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Wiseman, whom helped raise her.
Surviving are one son, Rev. Jim (Sharon) Dawson of Pekin; one grandson, James Loren Dawson of Pekin; one great-grandson, Kody James Dawson; four half-brothers, Piz (Evelyn) Olroyd of Erie, Roger (Joy) Olroyd of Virginia, IL, and Steve Olroyd and Darrell Olroyd, both of Metropolis; and one half-sister, Edith Fisher. She had many who called her mom or grandma.
Evelyn and her husband were instrumental in building Bethel Baptist Church at 2720 Broadway Street in Pekin, where Pastor Dawson was pastor for 15 years. They traveled as a team throughout the United States and foreign places spreading the word of God.
She was a charter member of God and Country Independent Baptist Church in Pekin, where her son is the pastor.
Evelyn loved the people of the UAW High-rise and brought many to Christ and church. She loved to cook and teach others to cook. She always took pride in her attire and always wore a dress.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2018 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Jim Dawson, her son, will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to God and Country Independent Baptist Church, Post Office Box 1084, Pekin, IL 61555.
