Augustus Webster (Webb) Bair
Augustus Webster (Webb) Bair Augustus Webster (Webb) Bair died in Palm Springs on August 22, 2015 following a brief illness.
Born December 11, 1925 in Kellyville, OK, Webb was the youngest of five children born to Rosa Avis Williams and Fred Bair. After his father's death the family fled the Dust Bowl in 1932 and drove to Raymond, WA, where an older brother was working as a longshoreman.
Graduating from Raymond High at 17, Webb joined the Navy and served out his WW II term of duty as Hospital Corpsman taking part in the Philippine Liberation action of 1945 in which his brother Fred Jr was killed.
After the war Webb did private nursing in Los Angeles and San Francisco, worked briefly as a longshoreman and was a baker in a chicken pie shop, becoming a first rate cook always at home in a kitchen. Eventually he moved to Olympia where he married and started work as an industrial claims investigator. Divorced in 1957, he moved to Seattle and continued working for the state.
In 1966 he advanced to Seattle/ King County Manager of Labor and Industries, a position that he held until retirement in 1981. Webb enjoyed an involvement with the performing arts. In the early 1950s he became actively involved in the Olympia Ballet Company as a principal dancer and as co-manager with long time friend and teacher, NW dance pioneer Sunny Woods. In the early '60s he briefly toured as a dancer and stage manager with Martha Nishitani and her dance company. After his dancing years he traveled, skied, read and was an active member of Seattle First Baptist Church. He was an early performer with and founding board member of Seattle Civic Light Opera, and served as board president of his West Seattle condominium.
He traveled to China, Europe, Alaska, Nova Scotia, Hawaii and Palm Springs where he settled permanently in 2000. He moved from his Palm Springs home to assisted living this past January.
He was preceded in death by brothers Fred Bair Jr, Roy Bair of Raymond, WA, Teddy Bair of Sepulpa, OK and sister Faye Bair Moore of Eugene, OR.
He is survived by nephews Fred Bair of Bremerton, WA and Darrell McGuire of Eugene, OR, nieces Kay Cutts of Eugene, OR and Mary Jane Stockholm of Broken Arrow, OK and close friends Henry Howard, Sterling Morris and Bruce Hayes of Seattle.
His affection, loyalty, generosity, twinkling brown eyes, sense of humor and his reluctance to say anything unpleasant about anybody will be missed.
Services at Seattle First Baptist Church will be private.
