Helen Iola Greer Barnhill, 94, of Wilmington, died Sunday, April 1, 2018, at home. Iola was born April 1, 1924 in Jersey City, NJ, daughter of the late Frenchie Walter Greer, Sr. and Bernice Braswell Greer. Her husband, Fred Burr Barnhill, Jr., and brother, Frenchie W. Greer, Jr., preceded her in death. Iola was a 1943 graduate of New Hanover High School. She worked at Norden Bomb Site in New York, NY (accuracy testing), City Optical, and was one of the first watch repairmen at Kingoff's Jewelers. Iola was very active in her community and in her church, Little Chapel on the Boardwalk. She taught Sunday school there for nine years, and was active with Women's Work there as well. Iola was a Girl Scout Leader at Wrightsville Beach for ten years, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and volunteered at New Hanover Regional Medical Center from 1980 to 1994. Her home was always a favorite for the neighborhood children. She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis Wicker of Myrtle Beach, SC, Kathleen Parker (Gary) of Burgaw, NC, and Helen Chiverton of Wilmington; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11am Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
