Margaret "Margo" Winchester Heiskell Carter, departed this life on Friday, April 6th after a valiant battle with cancer.

She was born on March 5, 1939 to Margaret Winchester and John McCall Heiskell in Memphis, Tennessee. She graduated from Miss Hutchison's School, being voted "Wittiest" in her senior class. She graduated from Holton Arms Junior College and attended Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College). On March 3, 1962, she married her soulmate, Halbert Leroy Carter Jr. of Huntingdon, Tennessee. Margo and Hal lived in Huntingdon, New Tazewell, and Nashville in Tennessee and in Atlanta, Georgia before she returned to Memphis.

Predeceased by her parents, her husband – Hal, her oldest son – John, and her brother, Lucius. Surviving her are her sons - James (Amelia) of Jackson, Tennessee and Horace (Missy) of Memphis, her daughter-in-law – UnChu, and her sister – Ruth (Wesley), both of Memphis. She leaves five beloved grandchildren – Margaret of Nashville, Tennessee, Adaline and Hal of Jackson, Tennessee, and Joe and Gus of Memphis. She also leaves a large extended family and a legion of close friends.

Margo was a member of the Junior League, Les Passees, and the Daughters of the King. A lifelong Episcopalian, she attended and worked as the receptionist for many years at St. John's Episcopal Church in Memphis. Margo, or "Gogo" as she was widely known, was an incredibly intelligent, artistically talented, and quick-witted classic southern lady of deep and genuine faith. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all those who took care of her and helped to make her final days as comfortable and pleasant as possible, her prayer partners, the people at the Monarch, and particularly the staff of Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Monday, April 16th at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Any memorial contributions should be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 3245 Central Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38111.
