Son of William David and Annis Dozier Rowell. Willie married his second cousin, Sallie Boyd Rowell. They had nine children, including two sets of boy/girl twins.
Willie was a sharecropper and worked hard to make a living for his large family. His daughter Dorothy said, "I guess we didn't have a lot when we were growing up and we moved frequently, but there was so much love in our family that we never noticed we didn't have much."
The love between Willie and Sallie was obvious to everyone who knew them. When Sallie died at home from cancer on the 4th of July 1941 Willie was devastated. He followed her six weeks later from what everyone says was a broken heart.
