George Robert Dummitt, 79, of Salem, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2007. He was born March 16, 1928 in Greenup, Ky., son of the late James Robert and Eliza Young Dummitt. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Mr. Dummitt was a singer, songwriter, entertainer, salesman and contractor. He attended Unity of Roanoke Valley and was a member of the Southwest Virginia Song Writers Association. He performed regularly at the Third Street Coffee House and for churches and other organizations for years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend and mentor to many. His surviving family includes his loving wife of 58 years, Beverly June Propst Dummitt; two sons and daughter-in-law, Robert and Deborah Dummitt of Vinton and Scott Dummitt Craig of Hampton, Va.; two daughters, Pam Dummitt of Richmond and Kimberly J. Dummitt of Salem and her fianc�, Edward L. Gates III; two brothers and sister-in-law, Edgar Dummitt and Leonard and Judy Dummitt; two sisters, Wanda Oglesby and Gaynell Dummitt; three grandchildren, Erin Dummitt, Evan Dummitt and Rainey Brie-anne Dummitt; and one great-grandson, Tosh Alexander Armstrong. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2007 from the chapel of John M. Oakey and Son, Salem, with the Rev. Diane Scribener-Clevenger officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Dummitt's name to the Third Street Coffee House in Roanoke
