He enrolled as a cadet at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in 1941 for two years, and later enrolled as a plebe at the US Naval Academy graduating as a member of the class of 1947. Matty attended Submarine school in 1948 and served as an officer on a number of submarines including the USS Amberjack, the USS Grouper, and the USS Harder through the early 1950’s. He also served as the engineering officer on the US Presidential Yacht, the USS Williamsburg, serving both the Truman and Eisenhower presidencies. He met his wife of 54 years, Rosemary Virginia Carnes, in New London, Connecticut in 1951. They were married at the Coast Guard Academy Chapel on July 5, 1952 and had three children, Howard L.
