James L. Welliver

MOUNT CARMEL - James L. Welliver, 94, of 2616 Locust Gap Highway, Mount Carmel, formerly of 519 W. Chestnut St., Shamokin, died at 8:45 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Mount Carmel Senior Living Community.

Born in Shamokin, May 14, 1917, he was a son of the late William and Mary (Lippiatt) Welliver.

The lifelong Shamokin resident was a partner and mechanic at Welliver Motors in Shamokin until it closed. He then worked for Bowersox Garage in Sunbury until his retirement.

He was married in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gowen City, on June 19, 1942, to the former Doris Kerstetter, who preceded him in death Nov. 19, 2007. They were married for 65 years.

James attended Washington Elementary School and Shamokin High School.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Shamokin, and served on the church council at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gowen City.

He was a 30-year member of American Legion Post 201 in Sunbury.

He enjoyed fishing and had taken numerous fishing trips throughout his life.

James entered active duty in the United States Army on May 19, 1943, from New Cumberland. During his enlistment, he served with Company A, 70th Tank Battalion, and earned the rank of technician fourth grade.

He was an instructor for tank mechanics at Fort Knox, Ky., and drove a tank retriever and performed second echelon duties on wheeled and track vehicles.

He earned an Honorable Service Lapel Button, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, American Campaign Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He received an honorable discharge Jan. 14, 1946, from Indiantown Gap Military Reservation.

James was the last member of his immediate family. He is survived by two daughters, Jill and her husband, Steven Todzia, and Cheryl Ziegenfuss; three grandchildren, Tammy Zarski, Tiffany Witcoskie and Amy Ziegenfuss; three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler and Ayden Zarski, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Welliver; a sister, Shirley Swinehart; three half-brothers, Jennings, Laird and Claude, and two half-sisters, Virginia and Jessie.
