Named for his grandfather, Alexander Mitchell (1817-1887) of Milwaukee, WI.

Alexander Mitchell (1866-1884) and David Ferguson Mitchell were the two surviving of seven children of John Lendrum Mitchell and Bianca Cogswell Mitchell of Milwaukee who were married in 1865.

Non-surviving infants buried at Forest Home Cemetery in the Mitchell family plot include:
Maria Mitchell (1870-1873)
John Cogswell Mitchell (1872-1873)
Jane Mitchell (1875-1876)

After their parents' divorce in 1877, David and Alexander were placed in the legal custody and care of their grandparents - Alexander Mitchell and Martha Reed Mitchell (1818-1902) of Milwaukee. Both Alexander (1817-1887) and Martha made numerous contributions to Milwaukee, Jacksonville and US history.

Alexander (1866-1884) was born with a developmental disability and attended a special school in Massachusetts until his death.

After his grandfather passed away in 1887, David lived with his grandmother Martha Reed Mitchell in Villa Alexandria, a fantastic family estate in Jacksonville Florida.
