Ellie was born at home in Raymond, CA, on July 15, 1930, to Phillip and Hertha Rowe. Ellie, along with her only sibling Paul, were raised by their grandparents on the family ranch. Ellie graduated from Fresno State with a degree in journalism. While at Fresno State, she met her future husband Melvin. They were married in Carmel, CA, in 1953.
While Mel was employed by Standard Oil Co. of California, Ellie worked as a kindergarten teacher. In 1971, Mel and Ellie became lifelong business partners when they established Dawson Oil Company. The business was originally located in Sonora, CA. In 1988, the business was relocated to Rocklin, CA, where they continued to operate as wholesale jobbers for Chevron Oil Company. They successfully ran their business, which now encompasses the foothills of Northern California, for the last 48 years.
Ellie loved owning a "family business". She loved her work, employees, customers, and the day to day challenge of running a business. She was a taskmaster. She expected her work to be perfect, and expected everyone around her to do the same.
One of Ellie's favorite times of the year was Christmas. Her employee Christmas parties were legendary, as she worked hard to show appreciation for all the employee's hard work throughout the year. She was a master gardener, an exceptional piano player, loved her dogs, and spending time on the deck with Mel and their neighbors, Linda and Klaus, while enjoying two fingers of red wine. Ellie will be missed.
Ellie is survived by her daughters, son, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mel; her brother, Paul; and her daughter-in-law, Stephany.
A private graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 20th, 2018, at Newcastle Cemetery.
