Dorothy graduated from Gustavus College with a degree in English Literature in 1958. While at Gustavus, she met Dick Chilkott.
Dorothy could quilt, sew, crochet, embroider, needlepoint, tat, and create hardanger textiles. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and church. Dorothy loved choral and classical music. She was an excellent piano and organ player, and also knew how to play the bassoon. She also worked as a substitute teaacher in the Pontiac schools from 1971-2004, as well as worked as the church secretary at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
