Daily Alta California (San Francisco, California), November 14, 1888 "William Atherton, aged seventy-six years, a Mexican war veteran and a California pioneer, had an attack of apoplexy on the street several days ago. He fell to the ground. Yesterday while walking along Eleventh street, near Webster, he had another and a fatal stroke. Deceased resided with C. M. Bonnemort, his employer, at Ninth and Jackson streets. His daughter lives in Washington Territory. He had no other known relative."
