ALLEN - At Brooklyn, N. Y.. April 2, Charles Doughty Allen, 63 years old. Mr. Allen was the grandson and son of notable New Churchmen. His grandfather, Cushing Allen, of Bath, Maine, became interested in the New Church before the beginning of the last century, and was one of the founders of the Bath Society. His father, John Allen, was one of the founders of one of the oldest and best known publishing houses in this country. It was first known as Allen & Ticknor, afterwards Ticknor & Fields, now Houghton, Miflin & Co. He was at one time publisher of the New Jerusalem Magazine, and his name appears as the publisher of the first Boston edition of the "True Christian Religion". Afterwards his bookstore New York City was the headquarters of the New Church there; and there he published several New-Church books and periodicals. His son bore the name of one of the earliest New-Church minsters, Charles Doughty, who was for many years the pastor of the New York Society. Mr. Allen lived a quiet business and family life. He has been for several years the head of a department of the U. S. Government in New York. and his untiring labors there were doubtless the chief cause of his death. He could never leave a task undone. He leaves a wife, two sons and a daughter, all active members of the Brooklyn Society. A younger daughter passed into the spirit world only two years ago, and the pleasure of rejoining her relieved the pain of separation from the others.
