My Grandma Effie Fern was born in Frozen Creek, Ky.She was the daughter of Kelly Mason and Lula Trent Hall. She was one of two girls born into a family of lots of brothers.

I am told by my uncles that her father Mason ran a tight ship and that if you were in Hazel Green you could hear him yelling at his boys in Gilmore.

Effie was married to Frank Brooks and together they had six sons. It seems Effie could not escape a house full of boys.

I spent nearly every Sunday at my grandma's house. When I was younger it was a happy place, but after my grandfather passed,it was a place of constant sorrow. It took years for my grandmother to recover from my grandpa's death,if she ever did. She lost two sons within a very short period and then my grandpa. One son Charles was shot at a card game, and the other Otis was ran over by a car on I-75. She held up through these losses remarkably well.I think because Papaw Frank was alive. After he died, when we visited her all she did was cry.Being young I did not understand, but now I'm older and I do not know how she went on. My uncle Eugene moved in with her in her last years, and I saw my grandma come back to life.

Effie was a very talented woman. She could look at a quilt pattern in a book and duplicate it. She could grow any kind of flower.

She lived in a snakey area, and I would scream when I saw a snake, she would just pick up her hoe and just whack it. She was not afraid of anything.

She lived alone for many years and she kept a small pearl handled revolver on her person at all times. If she heard a noise at night, she would just raise her window and shoot. Now granted, she lived in a remote area, and I would ask her if she wasn't afraid she would accidently shoot someone and she would say that they had no business being on her land and that it would be good enough for them.

She was a master storyteller. She could tell a ghost story that would give you chills for weeks. On the car ride home after visiting her ,my sister and I would be quiet as little mouses, thinking about a scarey story that she had told. My father would break the silence by shouting boo,and we would scream hysterically.

Grandma Effie loved to play the mail in sweepstakes. Every week she would show me her scratch off mail in tickets. Sadly the Ed McMann van never pulled up to her house in Gilmore, but she never quit trying. I think that if I could sum up what she taught me in life was exactly that, never give up. No matter how bad things get keep on.
