Opera Singer and Actor. Stage name John J. "Jack" Raffael.

John was the son of prominent Baltimore, Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey artist John R. Johnston, Sr. and Rebecca Freeman.

He married first to actress Elizabeth Godwin Ordway, stage name Bettina Gerard. She was the daughter of Gen. Albert Ordway. Bettina had previously been married to Arthur Padelford. They quickly divorced, and Bettina Gerard married several more times in quick succession. She struggled with substance abuse and died in 1905.

John married second to Mary Caroline Jackson, daughter of John Ross Jackson, on 1 Jun 1895 in San Francisco, California. Together they had two children. By 1899, the San Francisco papers were reporting that John "Jack" Raffael had left the family, a rumor staunchly denied by Mary. Then, in April 1903, Mary sued for divorce in San Francisco, charging that John had deserted her in Feb 1901 when he went east for an acting engagement, never to return. Their children were later adopted by Mary's second husband, John Sullivan Dunnigan. Children of John R. Robertson and Mary Caroline Jackson:
John Ross Dunnigan 1897–1984
Ida Lowler Dunnigan Mercer 1899–1948

John married third to Eleanor "Nellie" Rehill, daughter of John Rehill and Kathryn McGuire, in about 1935. Kathryn McGuire Rehill's half-brother and Nellie's uncle was Thomas Francis Kirk, Jr., manager of the Nixon Theater of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Nellie's brother was Harold Rehill, an opera singer and actor.

John is found on 1900 Census for Memphis, Tennessee, living as a boarder and listed as John Raffael. He is found on the 1940 Census for Manhattan, again listed as John Raffael, living with his wife Nellie at the Hotel St. James, West 45th Street (near Broadway). His occupation is listed as opera singer/actor.

His date of death and burial location are assumptions.
