Mrs. Cartwright's parents, the Brown's, were among the pioneers of Racine, first arriving in 1862 from Pittsburgh. Her lineage can be traced back to the Puritans in England in the 1700s, of which they were often persecuted because of their race. It was said at the time of her death that she was highly respected amongst the African-American population of Racine and well thought of by a large percentage of the white population as well.

Her mother was Mrs. Anna Brown, who sadly passed away the morning of March 13 1901 at the family home, 1224 Grand Avenue due to severe burns suffered all over her body the day before while cooking. The doctor informed her family that there was no chance of recovery.
