94 of Sugarcreek died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013 at 3:25 a.m. following a brief illness. He was born July 11, 1919 in Sugarcreek to the late Sherman G. and Cora (Miller) Stevanus.
He was postmaster of Sugarcreek Post Office from 1956 to 1980 when he retired. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the First Mennonite Church at Sugarcreek.
He was married Feb. 13, 1937 to the former M. Irene Gardner who preceded him on July 5, 1998. He is survived by his daughter, Janet (Joseph) DuBrule of Daytona Beach, Fla.; three sons, Gene (Anita) Stevanus of Rockledge, Fla., Geoffrey (Jean) Stevanus and Reno (Marge) Stevanus, both Sugarcreek; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister-in-law, Lucille King of Sugarcreek. In addition to his parents and his wife, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Kohler and Marion Palmer; and a brother, Claude Stevanus.
Services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013 at 11 a.m. at First Mennonite Church at Sugarcreek with Rev. Jayne Byler officiating. Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery at Sugarcreek. Sugarcreek American Legion will conduct military honors. Friends may call Tuesday 5-8 p.m. at the First Mennonite Church at Sugarcreek.
