Blaine Robert Mills, age 7 passed away on December 21, 1966 due to injuries sustained in a tragic collision of his school bus by a dump truck.

Four days before Christmas, 1966, a truck collided with a school bus at Walker Rd. and Highway 3. The truck overturned and spilled tons of sand into the bus. Despite the efforts of rescue workers, eight children died under the crushing weight.

What happened A 35 ton dump truck traveling east on Highway 3 swerved to avoid a car in slippery winter conditions, and did not make its turn north onto Walker Road shortly after 3 p.m. It turned over onto a school bus that had stopped in the opposite direction on Walker Road, about 100 feet from Highway 3, to let off children. The dump truck’s load of sand killed eight and injured 16 youngsters on board.

48 years later memorial for eight young crash victims...

Oldcastle Heritage Park, on Walker Road north of Highway 3, will be officially opened on Sunday, November 2, 2014. A tree will be planted for each child who died in the school bus accident of Dec. 21, 1966. Park in the Tecumseh Fire Station No. 2 lot at 5520 Walker Road.
