Joseph J. Abdoo, 69, president of the Poughkeepsie Exchange Club, died Sunday at St. Francis Hospital. He was a resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie.

Edward Kenealy, a past state president of the Exchange Club and a member of one of Poughkeepsie's two chapters, said Abdoo was one of the club's more dedicated members for the past 20 years.

"Joe was conscious of people's civic responsibility to the community in which they live," Kenealy said. "He lived the club's motto, 'Unity in Service.'"

Kenealy said Abdoo was particularly interested in the club's youth activities and for the past several years was in charge of bringing a circus to town each summer.

Mr. Abdoo owned and operated a self-service market at 133 Main St., City of Poughkeepsie, for several years before his retirement 10 years ago.

A local resident for the last 58 years, he was born in Kingston on Feb. 16, 1910, the son of Assid and Rumsa (Soman) Abdoo. He was educated in Poughkeepsie and was a graduate of St. Mary's High School.

Mr. Abdoo was also New York State district director of the Exchange Club and chairman of the Club's naturalization program. He was also chairman of the Freedom Shrine and the Club's youth achievement awards program. Mr. Abdoo was instrumental in obtaining the Clyde Beatty Circus for the youth fund's annual event. He was also a third degree knight with the Florentine Council of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of St. Mary's Church.

Mr. Abdoo is survived by three brothers, Frederick of Oradell, N.J.; Albert of River Edge, N.J.; and John of Poughkeepsie; five sisters, Miss Mary Abdoo, Miss Freda Abdoo, Mrs. Jean Hoffmann, and Miss Hannah Abdoo, all of Poughkeepsie; and Mrs. Gemile Marrone of Highland; a great-niece; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are tonight from 7 to 9 and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 218 Mill St., City of Poughkeepsie.

The Exchange Club will have a service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7 p.m., and the Florentine Council will have a service at 7:30 p.m. Prayers will be said at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Services will be held on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home to St. Mary's Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
