Columbus Grove, OH - The "Day Block":
• 1861 - Alford H. Day (1840-1911) purchased a lot on the NW corner of High & Sycamore. There he built a wood frame building out of which he operated a mercantile business.
• 1873 - Alford Day then built The Grove House hotel on the NE corner of Sycamore & Plum (Kohls' parking lot). Son, Homer Rufus Day (1875-1946), assumed ownership when Alford retired. The Grove House later became the Witt Hotel.
• 1883 - The new brick & mortar "Day Block" became home to the:
* Day Dry Goods Store
* Day Mercantile
* Day Opera House, above the Mercantile, where people travelled distances to see and hear entertainment.
* Independent Order of Odd Fellows 464 (I.O.O.F.) Lodge
