Altona Trent Johns (1904-1977), born in Asheville, North Carolina, received a B.A. (1925) from Atlanta University. The author of Play Songs of the Deep South (1944), an illustrated survey of children’s folk songs, Johns earned her M.A. (1951) from Columbia University. Mrs Johns taught music at Virginia State College (now University) in Petersburg, Virginia and Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL.

Mrs Altona Trent Johns of Baton Rouge La died Sunday morning at Doctors Hospital Baton Rouge La. A native of Asheville NC she had lived in this area for a number of years. She was the widow of Dr Vemon N. Johns.

She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she served as the Minister of Music for a number of years. She received the master of art at Columbia University, New York and attended the Juilliard School of Music, NY studied further at the University of Rochester, the University of Pennsylvania, West Virginia State College and Alabama State University.

She taught Latin at Atlanta University in 1926 and 1927 piano music at Bennett College. From 1929 - 1934 at Virginia Seminary Lynchburg and music at the Prince Edward County Schools from 1934 until 1948. Prior to coming to Virginia State College she taught at Alabama State College.

After her retirement from Virginia State College in 1972 she was associated with the Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. She was the co director of Black Music Center featuring the Black Man in American Music.

Surviving are three daughters Mrs Adelaide Anderson of Piedmont, California. Rachel "Enid" Johns Robinson of Reston, Virginia and Jeanne Johns Adkins of Baton Rouge LA. Two sons Vernon I. Johns of Petersburg, Va. and John Johns of Alexandria, VA. 12 grandchildren a brother Dr William Trent of Greensboro NC., three daughters-in-law two sons-in-law a number of nieces, nephews cousins.

Funeral services will be at 1 pm Wednesday in Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev A L James pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church officiating Burial will be in Johns Plantation Farmville, VA. In lieu of flowers con tributions may be made to the William T Johns Scholarship Fund at Livingston College in Salisbury NC or Howard University School of Religion for Dr Vernon Johns Preaching Prize.
