George was born in Tylertown, MS back when it was still located in Pike County. Walthall County was created in 1910, well after George left the area. What took him away from Pike County? A race riot. George McGee, at the time Magee, caused a race riot in Pike County because he allegedly killed a white man. He and several other family members escaped and headed north into the Delta and changed the family name from Magee to McGee, for protection.
