Clarabel Ashby, widow of the late Capt. George Ashby, died in Homer early Monday morning. While Mrs. Ashby had been confined to the house for the past few years, her last illness covered a period of about six weeks.
Mrs. Ashby was born in Auburn 78 years ago and was the daughter of Rev. John M. and Sarah A. Austin. Rev. John M. Austin was the pastor of the Universalist church of this city at the time the present edifice was erected. Clarabel
Austin was married to Capt. George E. Ashby on April 24, 1867 [at Norwalk, CT] and they resided in Auburn for a number of years, Capt. Ashby being in partnership with his father in conducting the Osbourne House.
Captain Ashby's death occurred in Cortland 16 years ago on September 28. Surviving Mrs. Ashby are one sister, Mrs. Ella A. Riegle [Reigle] of Batavia; [one adopted daughter two nieces, and one nephew], Miss Bessie M. Ashby of Homer, Mrs. W. R. [Mehetabel] Fisher, Mrs. Elmer S. [Grace] Webster and John C. Underwood, all of Auburn.
Funeral services will be held at the home of her nephew, John C. Underwood, 27 Lewis Street, on Wednesday at 3:00 and will be private. Rev. Percy L. Clark of Ithaca, former pastor of the Universalist Church of Cortland, will conduct the services.
