Musician. Best known as the founder and namesake of the eponymous band, The Spencer Davis Group, Mr. Davis was born in Wales, the son of a postal engineer. Taking inspiration from his family, he began learning to play a variety of musical instruments at the age of 6. Early influences on his musical palette included Blues and Jazz. It was the later of which helped guide him to his greatest success, when in 1963, he formed the Spencer Davis Group alongside the now legendary Steve Winwood. Though its initial tenure was brief, the band recorded several hits, scoring a string of number ones in the United Kingdom. Two later songs, "I'm a Man," and "Gimme Some Lovin" were able to cross the Atlantic, ascending the charts in the United States as well. Following the departure of Steve Winwood in 1967, Davis continued the group for another two years before disbanding in the Summer of 1969. Following the dissolution of the band, Davis worked as an executive with the Island Records label, promoting artists such as Bob Marley and the Wailers, Robert Palmer, and his former bandmate, Steve Winwood. In addition, he reformed the Spencer Davis Group which, all while undergoing a number of personnel changes, continued to record and tour for the next four decades.
