Born in Randolph County, North Carolina where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Company F, 46th North Carolina Troops in Randolph County at the age of 18 on May 1, 1862, for the war. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal on July 10, 1862. Promoted to Sergeant in March-April 1863 and promoted to 1st Sergeant on November 1,1863. Present or accounted for through February 15, 1865. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.
