In the early 1940's, Albert went into business with a Mr. Louis Hall. Prior to that the two men owned a textile plant in Garnerville, NY. They outgrew the building in New York and bought the Sanco Piece Dye works in Phillipsburg, NJ. It was the largest privately owned textile plant in the nation. The enormous building was situated on 26 acres of land on Stockton Street in Phillipsburg, NJ. Eventually, Albert bought Hall out. Albert sold Sanco in 1968 to a company named Crown.
Albert owned the Lanark Stables, a number of restaurants, and he owned a bank. He owned a significant amount of real estate in the surrounding communities. He was the developer of 60 Cape Cod houses in the Phillipsburg area in 1948. He owned an ice cream plant in Lopatcong Township called Golden Valley Farms. His grandson, Sandy, was the model for the packaging on the ice cream.
The restaurants were the Lanark Hotel in Roxbury, NJ, a neighboring community of Phillipsburg and the Peke Inn. He also owned a dairy bar, one of the first in the area. It was called the Pelican. It was on Memorial Parkway in Phillipsburg. The building was torn down in about 1998. It is now a parking lot for new cars. He also owned the Pavilion, a fine restaurant in the outskirts of Phillipsburg. Many family members had their wedding receptions in the restaurant which he built when his daughter Lila got married.
He had another restaurant in Allentown, PA named Poor Richards. His grandson, Jimmy Sands was the chef at this resaurant.
Albert leaves behind his four children, Albert Sands, Jr., Lila Sands Jones, Sylvia Sands Meyer, and Yvonne Sands Nelson. He has 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He is also survived by four sisters, Mary Meletta Rose Perrone and Nancy Danello all of Hawthorne, NJ and Angelina Parmellee of Fairlawn, NJ. His brothers Jack Sands and James Sands of Phillipsburg and Charles Sands of Paterson, NJ preceded him in death.
He is buried in Oxford, New Jersey.
