George Justice Pitman (1839-1884) - Find a Grave Memorial

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Recklesstown, New Jersey (now part of Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey), he entered the Union Army on August 26, 1862, when he was mustered in as a Private in Company C, 1st New York Volunteer Cavalry (known as the "Lincoln Cavalry", the company was recruited for New York service in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). He would go on to serve through the end of the war, and was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Sailors Creek, Virginia on April 6,1865. His citation reads simply "Capture of flag of the Sumter Heavy Artillery (C.S.A.)", and his Medal was awarded to him on May 3, 1865. He was promoted to Corporal on August 18, 1864, to Sergeant on June 1, 1865, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1865. After the war he worked as a carpenter, and resided in Camden, New Jersey. He died in April 1884 from a fall while working in the German Hospital on Morris Street in Philadelphia (now known as Lankanau Hospital).
