Mary Lou graduated from Virginia Intermont College and received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from East Tennessee State University. She was on the Physical Education faculty at Virginia Intermont for 57 years, teaching hundreds to swim during her career. She volunteered for 60 years with the American Red Cross serving as a lifetime board member and chairman for four years.
She was the first female on the board of The Bank of Marion. She was an avid reader, accomplished bridge player and competitive tennis player. Mary Lou was a member of Gardner's Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.
After the closure of Virginia Intermont, she worked tirelessly for 22 months writing the book, "Virginia Intermont College, One Hundred Thirty Years."
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald ; a son ; and two grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters.
