Musician. Best known for his seminal work in the Bluegrass genre. He first played banjo for Jimmy Martin's band, the Sunny Mountain Boys. After a four year stint with Martin's band, he left to form his own group, the Kentucky Mountain Boys, which later became better known as The New South. Crowe's 1975 album, J. D. Crowe & The New South featured songs composed by a number of noted musicians such as Canadian folk singer, Gordon Lightfoot and Bluegrass legend, Earl Scruggs. Over the band's career, Crowe recruited several famous Country and Bluegrass legends including Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, and Doyle Lawson. In 1983, the composition "Fireball" garnered him a Grammy award in the Country Instrumental category. For his influence in the genre, Crowe was awarded the Bluegrass Star Award in 2011.
