Billy Joseph Akers, 73, of Greenup, Kentucky, passed away Monday, January 24, 2022 at Kings Daughters Medical Center, Ashland, Kentucky. Billy was born April 28, 1948 in Ironton, Ohio a son to the late Burl and Oleda (Born) Akers. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Kathy (Delawder) Akers, whom he married June 27, 1970. He was a loving husband, a great father, and an epic paw-paw. The Akers family lost their hero.
Billy was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and served in the United States Army. He retired from Tampa Electric Company where he worked in maintenance and was a crew leader. Billy was a musician, historian and author of "Trivial Truths from the Hills of Ohio". He led the praise group at Freedom Worship Church of God in Greenup, KY, he also produced "The Journey Through the Past Series" on the city of Ironton, Green Township and Greenup, Kentucky.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: brother, David Akers
He is survived by:
two sons, Shane (Denise) Akers of Tampa Bay, FL and Travis Akers of Chesapeake, OH
granddaughter, Courtney Akers
four sisters, Phyllis Terry, Regina Waddell both of Franklin Furnace, Bonita Dawson of Lexington, KY and Teresa Palmer of Ironton
brother, Scott Akers of Tampa Bay, FL
a brother-in-law, whom he thought of as a son, Mark Delawder
Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M., Thursday, February 3, 2022 at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 South 7th Street, Ironton, Ohio with Pastor Kevin Witt officiating. Burial will follow in Haverhill Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by VFW Post #8850.
